The aquarium

The Green below Flaming Gorge Dam is the West's great sight-fishing tailwater: emerald-clear releases through a red-rock canyon, with trout densities in the A Section pushing 8,000-14,000 fish per mile. You see them: pods of browns and rainbows finning in every run: and they see you, which is the game.

A, B and C

The A Section (dam to Little Hole, 7 miles) is the famous water: a red canyon full of visible fish, floated or walked via the riverside trail: rare luxury for a western river. The B Section (Little Hole to Indian Crossing) mellows and fishes bigger dries with fewer boats; the C Section below Browns Park turns moody and less dense but grows the biggest browns. Scuds, midges and baetis are daily bread; the cicada fall (May-June) and terrestrial summer bring the surface show this river is loved for.

Clear-water craft

Long leaders, small flies, careful feet: everything is technical and everything is visual. Flows from the dam (tracked on this page) set wading limits: under ~1,500 cfs opens the walk-fishing wide; releases can change with hydropower schedules. Dutch John services the river; Little Hole's trail makes it the best walk-wade tailwater access in the country.

Common questions

When is the cicada hatch on the Green?

Roughly mid-May through June in warm years: big foam bugs slapped near the banks move fish that ignore everything else. It is weather-dependent: call Dutch John shops before driving for it.

Can I fish the Green without a boat?

Better than almost any tailwater: the A Section trail runs 7 miles of prime water from the dam to Little Hole. Walk ten minutes past the parking crowds and pick your pod.

Why is the water so clear?

Flaming Gorge releases from deep in a huge, sediment-settling reservoir: the river below runs filtered and cold, which powers both the clarity and the scud-driven biomass that packs it with trout.
