An old irrigation dam

Utah State Parks says local farmers began building Otter Creek's 40-foot earth dam in 1897 with volunteer labor and homemade equipment, under a supervisor who had never built a dam. The reservoir still stores irrigation water, and Otter Creek State Park opened on its south end in 1965, at an elevation of 6,350 feet. The park's brochure describes about seven miles of reservoir.

State Parks lists rainbow, cutthroat and brown trout, smallmouth bass and wipers, and its brochure says Otter Creek has been rated one of Utah's best fisheries for rainbow trout, with a reputation for trout of 4 to 8 pounds. DWR's stocking records back up the trout focus: about 35,800 rainbows went in during February and April 2026, and 2025 plantings added brown trout, tiger trout, cutbows and 19,470 wipers.

On September 11, 2026 the park reported the reservoir at 10 percent and dropping rapidly, with the deepest water around 10 feet and new boating hazards appearing daily; the ramp was open and the dock back in the water.
