Fishing Fish Lake: the full guide

A high plateau lake

Fish Lake covers about 2,500 acres at 8,800 feet on the Fish Lake Plateau in central Utah, the largest natural mountain lake in the state and a fishery with a long tradition. Lake trout (mackinaw) reach substantial size, splake are stocked and grow fast, and rainbow trout, yellow perch and brown trout fill out a card that fishes year-round including through the ice.

Mackinaw and splake

Lake trout are the trophy species: troll large plugs and spoons deep or jig over the structure at 60-120 feet, with fish moving shallower after ice-out and in fall. Splake, a lake trout-brook trout hybrid, are stocked and provide excellent action in the 15-40-foot range, taking jigs, spoons and bait through open water and ice alike.

Perch, rainbows and the ice

Yellow perch school over the flats in numbers and anchor the winter fishery, which is a Utah institution: the lake freezes reliably and draws anglers from across the state. Rainbow trout cruise the shallower water and take bait and spinners from shore, particularly around the resorts and the inlet areas.

Sevier County logistics

Lodges, ramps and Forest Service campgrounds serve the lake, reached by Highway 25 off Highway 24. Services are available at the historic lodges but limited otherwise. The elevation keeps summer comfortable and winter serious: check ice conditions and road access, and dress for weather that changes quickly at 8,800 feet.
