A short river carrying an enormous run

The Naknek River flows about 35 miles from Naknek Lake in Katmai National Park to Bristol Bay at the town of Naknek, and it carries part of the largest sockeye salmon run on earth. Alongside the salmon it holds rainbow trout that grow to extraordinary size, plus Arctic char, Dolly Varden, northern pike and grayling in the system.

Sockeye and the other salmon

The sockeye run peaks in late June and July and is genuinely difficult to overstate: millions of fish enter Bristol Bay, and the commercial fishery here is the largest of its kind. Anglers take sockeye on flies and hardware in the river, with king, coho, chum and pink salmon also running through the season.

Trophy rainbow trout

The Naknek is famous among fly anglers for rainbow trout of exceptional size, fed by salmon eggs and flesh through the season. Beads, flesh flies, mouse patterns and streamers all take fish, with spring and fall the prime windows. These are wild fish under careful management: handle and release them properly.

Bristol Bay logistics

King Salmon and Naknek provide lodges, guides and jet-boat access, reached by scheduled flights from Anchorage. The river is the gateway to Katmai National Park and the famous Brooks Falls bears. Bears are present throughout: follow the local protocols, which are taken seriously here for good reason.
