A bay with depth

Choctawhatchee Bay stretches 30 miles behind the Destin and Fort Walton Beach barrier, unusually deep for a Florida bay with holes past 40 feet. That depth, combined with the pass at Destin and the river flowing in at the east end, creates varied habitat: speckled trout and redfish on the grass and shorelines, flounder in the pass, plus sheepshead, drum and seasonal visitors.

Trout and redfish

Speckled trout hold the grass flats and deeper edges, with the biggest fish on the shallow flats at first light in spring and fall: topwater and suspending plugs. Winter pushes them into the deeper holes and the river mouth, a pattern locals fish carefully with slow-worked plastics. Redfish work the marsh edges, docks and the bayous, especially on higher tides.

The pass and the bayous

Destin Pass funnels everything on moving tides: flounder, redfish, jacks and, seasonally, cobia and king mackerel just outside. The bayous on the north shore hold redfish and trout in protected water when the bay is rough. Bridge structure holds sheepshead in the cool months, an underrated fishery with excellent eating.

Ramps at Destin, Niceville, Fort Walton Beach and along the north shore serve the bay, with a large charter fleet based at Destin. Summer brings heavy recreational traffic to the pass and the beaches: fish the bay’s north side and bayous, or go early.
