A river of two states

The Escambia River rises in Alabama as the Conecuh and flows into Florida, running 240 miles through sandy pine country to Escambia Bay near Pensacola. It is a classic southern blackwater river: tannin-stained, sandbar-lined, with oxbows and cypress sloughs. Largemouth bass, bream, catfish and, in the lower river, striped bass and speckled trout in the tidal reaches.

The bass fishery lives in the oxbows, sloughs and cypress edges off the main channel: pitch jigs and plastics to the wood, work spinnerbaits along the edges, and throw topwater over the pads in summer. River level dictates everything: rising water spreads fish into the flooded timber, falling water pulls them back to the channel and the deeper bends.

Stripers and the tidal river

The Escambia holds a remnant Gulf-strain striped bass population, supported by stocking, that concentrates in the cooler upper river during summer and moves through the system seasonally: a specialist fishery. The lower tidal river adds speckled trout and redfish where salt pushes upstream, giving anglers a genuinely mixed bag within a few river miles.

Ramps at Molino, Century and along the lower river serve the system, with the upper reaches best suited to smaller boats given deadfalls and sandbars.
